About us

In 2020 Cockerton Prize Silver Band celebrated 150 years since it was formally founded back in 1870. We are very proud to have represented Darlington in brass banding for all these years.

In March of our celebratory year we became the Second Section Northern Area Regional Champions, qualifying for the National Brass Championships in Cheltenham later in the year and promotion to First Section from 2021. The National Finals were postponed due to coronavirus, but they went ahead last year and we were placed in the top ten - two top ten national placements twice in a row!

Our First Section adventures began this year, and we're looking forward to more to come! We have been a First Section band before, and we're eager to resume from where we left off.

Our origins lie back in the world of Queen Victoria and they arose out of Cocoa Palaces and the great working class tradition of brass bands that became associated with towns, mines and mills throughout the 19th century.  Since the 1920's we've been based in our current bandroom - which was originally a coach house - in the grounds of Cockerton Band & Musical Institute (a CIU club). From there we rehearse hard twice a week to prepare for the many competitions & concerts we're engaged in during the year. Please see our Engagements page for our current list of jobs

The band is available for private functions such as weddings, birthday parties etc & can perform music to suit all occasions. For details on how to book us contact our Engagements Secretary
